Where to stay in Kyoto

Stay in Gion, a historic geisha district next to Yasaka Shrine, for centuries-old wooden machiya houses and evening entertainment. Arashiyama in the west offers access to the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, where tall Moso bamboo stalks, some rising 20 meters or more, line a paved path; the sound of wind through the stalks, a creaking noise, is officially recognized as one of Japan's 100 Soundscapes. For easy access to temples and sights, stay in central Kyoto, close to Nijo Castle and the main shopping districts.

Why visit

Kyoto contains over 1,600 Buddhist temples and 400 Shinto shrines, with 17 locations designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites. The city served as Japan's capital from 794 to 1868, preserving centuries of imperial architecture, sacred gardens, and traditional craftsmanship that remain largely intact today.
