Hotels in Cairo
Cairo was founded by the Fatimids in the 10th century on the banks of the Nile, and the city blends ancient wonders with centuries of Islamic and Coptic heritage. Al-Muizz Street, built in 969 A.D., is lined with palaces, mosques, and schools, while the Grand Egyptian Museum has more than 100,000 artifacts spanning thousands of years of Egyptian history, including the complete collection of King Tutankhamun's treasures. The Pyramids of Giza stand on the west bank of the Nile River in Giza, just south-southwest of Cairo, with the Great Sphinx at their feet.

Where to stay in Cairo
Zamalek, on Gezira Island in the Nile, is an upscale leafy district with art galleries, boutique shops, and elevated dining—quieter than central Cairo while remaining central. Garden City, south of Downtown, offers historic colonial villas and tree-lined embassy streets with access to the Nile waterfront and Tahrir Square on foot. Islamic Cairo centres on Khan el-Khalili, a medieval bazaar winding through centuries-old mosques and narrow alleyways, with the Ibn Tulun Mosque and Al-Azhar among its architectural anchors. Downtown Cairo showcases early 20th-century colonial buildings, Tahrir Square, and the Egyptian Museum, with a faster urban pace and walkable street-food scene.
Why visit
The Great Pyramid of Giza was built about 4,500 years ago from some 2.3 million stone blocks over roughly 20 years, and it was the world's tallest structure for about 3,800 years. The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square holds more than 100,000 ancient artefacts spanning 5,000 years of civilisation. Tutankhamun's treasures are now at the Grand Egyptian Museum near the Giza Pyramids, and the royal mummies are at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization.
